Hotel Cernia Isola Botanica
Hotel Cernia Isola Botanica is a small, family run hotel, the ideal destination for nature lovers and those who appreciate the pleasures of gastronomy and wine. The splendid botanical garden is undoubtedly one of the principle characteristics of this peaceful location, far from the hubbub of the more “exploited” tourist destinations. Here, you may rediscover the pleasure of an authentic, cordial and truly sincere welcoming environment.
Cristiano and Francesca, in fact, open their doors to their guests with warmth and enthusiasm, knowing that passing an enjoyable holiday also means feeling at your ease and being spoilt by a thousand attentions in surroundings which are elegant yet also informal.
The house offers a cuisine of typical dishes which are revisited in a modern key with special regard to the offerings of the season as well as to the herbs and vegetables cultivated with organic methods in the garden, all combined with a vast selection of the best Italian wines.
Lovers of the sea and of tranquillity have the possibility of passing days of relaxation in the private garden on the cliffs, with direct access to the sea, just a few steps away from the small sandy beach.
The botanical garden - A small park, in the park of the archipelago, is of about 10.000 sqm, 200 m from the sea, with over 700 varieties of autochthonous and exotic plants. Citruses, bananas, palms, all kinds of fruit plants, and many flowering plants. There is also a suggestive cave, formed by enormous granite rocks lying one on top of the other, forming a "Fairies’ Chimney"; in the area surrounding the cave, it is also possible to see the remains of some ferrous materials used there for fusion by the Etruscans. Two streams run there, taking water to the many small springs on the slopes of Mount Capanne (1019 m). The streams are crossed by a number of little wooden bridges at the sides of which a typically native, hydrophila and tropical flora grows,: Alocasias, taros, gunneras, Ethiopian callas and palustrines, alders, forget-me-nots, enormous mounds of hydrangeas and various types of ferns, amongst which the "Osmunda regalis", a protected plant. There are also: a corner of Mediterranean maquis, where sometimes there are mushrooms, a small pine forest and even a corner of tropical forest with lianas for climbing up as far as 20 metres high. In this small paradise live and thrive: the marten cat, the hedgehog, the green lizard, the gecko, the coluber, the blind-worm, the natrix, the lizard, frogs, tortoises, eels, the Sardinian tree-toad and the gold fish. There are also birds such as the turtle-dove, the sparrow, the blackbird, the fly catcher, the great tit, the swallow, the goldfinch, the chaffinch, the cuckoo, the hoopoe, the thrush, the robin, the woodcock, the little owl, the owl, the wag-tail, the greenfinch, the blackcap and the nightingale which sings its melodious songs until late in the night and at the first light of day. There are birds just passing through as well, which, in the spring, make a stop on the island.
The garden in whichI would have liked to hide when I was little - "At the Hotel Cernia Isola Botanica there is a very special garden, with two streams and many, many plants, even exotic ones. Great granite boulders rise up on its terraces. Its many, characteristic corners, its little bridges, the boulders you can climb on, the tree-house, the pond with water hyacinths, the trees with the lianas, the tropical plants with enormous leaves, make it a paradise for children. But I believe that a lot of adults, too, would like to go back to being younger to be able to hide in amongst the bamboo and the leaves as big as elephant’s ears."
